Hudson Kiwanis Baseball Challenger Program
The Hudson Kiwanis Baseball Challenger League was established in 2008 to enable boys and girls with physical and intellectual challenges, ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the hundreds of other Hudson children who participate in the Kiwanis Baseball program.
Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three.
In a Challenger game, each player gets a chance to bat. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster, or when a pre-determined number of runs have been scored, or when three outs are recorded. Little League recommends that no score be kept during Challenger games. The Challenger players wear the same uniforms and use the same safety equipment as other Kiwanis Baseball players.
The 2019 Challenger Team plays 1 game per week every Sunday afternoon beginning with our first practice on Sunday May 19 and ending with season ending Family Fun game on Sunday July 16th. Most games are played here in Hudson against other Akron area Challenger teams as well as other Hudson Kiwanis baseball teams (11-12 year olds) but with Challenger League rules, etc. All home games will be played at 2 pm, Sundays at Barlow Field in Hudson (on Barlow Road near Little Tikes).
There is no charge or fee to play in the Challenger program.
The Hudson Challenger League also participates in the annual Challenger Team day at the Akron Rubber Ducks stadium. All local area Challenger Teams get to play a real game on the Ducks field with the help of the current Rubber Ducks Team and staff.
One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.
Parents and teenagers are strongly encouraged to become involved in this uniquely-rewarding division of Hudson Kiwanis Baseball. For more information, please contact the Challenger League Commissioner and Coach, Paul Gorman at 330-283-8941 or firstname.lastname@example.org
